A fire suspicious in origin has destroyed a post office in North Central Arkansas. The Harrison Daily Times reports the Compton Post Office in Newton County was leveled by the blaze early Sunday morning.

Compton Fire Chief Garland Matlock says the fire started between 3:00 and 4:00 Sunday morning in the lobby area of the post office, which is unlocked. Due to the time of the fire, Chief Matlock says the Newton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Newton County Sheriff Keith Slape says they hope to have an arson dog brought in Tuesday.

A postal inspector visited the remains of the building Sunday and said there was still mail in the building that was destroyed by the fire.
