Photo: David McClister/Eagle Rock EntertainmentThe Magpie Salute, the Black Crowes spinoff group led by guitarist Rich Robinson, will release its debut studio album, High Water I, on August 10. The 12-track collection was produced by Robinson and recorded at Dark Horse Studios in Nashville.
A lyrics video for one of the new tracks, “Send Me an Omen,” has premiered on the band’s official YouTube channel. The song is a hard-driving tune featuring psychedelic rock, blues and soul influences. The clip features a montage of photos of The Magpie Salute’s members and their equipment in the studio, superimposed with footage of outdoor landscapes and with some colorful lighting effects.
“‘Send Me an Omen,’ to me, wraps up all of the elements of this band,” says Robinson in a statement. “There’s pure rock ‘n’ roll juxtaposed with these pop melodies sung with a melancholy that creates this beautiful balance of surreal dark and light.” The track will be released as a digital single and via major streaming sites starting this Friday, June 8.
The Magpie Salute also features ex-Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Seven Pipien, as well as lead singer John Hogg and drummer Joe Magistro. The band is planning to release a follow-up album titled High Water II next year.
Meanwhile, the group has close to 40 North American tour dates lined up this year, spanning from a July 1 show in Copper Mountain, Colorado through a September 23 appearance at the Bourbon & Beyond festival in Louisville, Kentucky. Among the concerts are shows with Gov’t Mule, The Avett Brothers and Blackberry Smoke.
