Ozarka College in Melbourne has become only the state’s second two-year college to offer residence halls/student housing.

Arkansas State University-Beebe is the only other two-year school among the state’s 22 colleges offering campus housing, according to the CollegeSimply website.

Ownership of Delta Hills Apartments in Melbourne was transferred to Ozarka College, effective June 1st. As of the Fall 2018 semester, the college intends to use these apartments as residence halls/student housing for full-time, degree seeking Ozarka College students. Current residents have been notified of this change, and accommodations are being made to ensure they are able to find suitable housing and do not become displaced.

Act 556 of 2017 authorizes two-year colleges in Arkansas to have residence halls for the first time. The passing of this legislation allows Ozarka to offer opportunities not previously available to its students.

Ozarka President Dr. Richard Dawe says college officials are very excited about the addition of student housing, particularly for some of the more unique degree programs not offered elsewhere in the state. Dawe says a need has developed for aviation, culinary, welding and other programs, and there continues to be a shortfall of affordable housing in the Melbourne area. He says housing of this size will serve as an excellent test bed for possible larger facilities in the future.

The apartments are one to two bedroom, but the college will be making some modifications in hopes of offering housing opportunities for to up to 15-20 students who have individual bedrooms and shared common areas.

The apartments are within sight of the College’s Melbourne campus and a short walk from classes.
