The Michael J. Cleary Endowment and the South Shore Foundation Endowment combined their grants with those from the Twin Lakes Community Foundation to award a total of $9,500 to two schools. Yellville-Summit Elementary received $4,000, and Flippin Elementary School was awarded $5,500. The awards were given to aid in the improvement of grade-level reading skills.

Yellville-Summit’s grant, “Panthers Reading All Summer,” aims to reduce the summer learning gap by sending books home to encourage reading at home during the summer and by giving books as an incentive/reward for participation in the local summer library program or summer tutoring program. Twin Lakes Community Foundation awarded $1,000, which was matched by the Arkansas Community Foundation, with an additional $2,000 from the Michael J. Cleary Endowment.

Flippin Elementary School’s “Flippin Out About Reading” plans to collaborate with parents and community members to implement a 12-month grade-level reading initiative for every student in kindergarten through eighth grade. The school district plans to continue the program on an annual basis so that by the time each child entering kindergartener goes to high school, he or she will have 50 books in his or her own library at home. Twin Lakes Community Foundation provided $1,000 for the project, which was matched by Arkansas Community Foundation. South Shore Endowment provided an additional $1,000 and, the Michael J. Cleary Endowment with the Twin Lakes Community Foundation provided $2,500.
