According to the Humane Society of the United States, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats nationally are euthanized each year, simply because too many pets come into shelters and too few people consider adoption when looking for a pet. By choosing to adopt instead of shop, shelter animals are saved and shelter space is opened for other animals who desperately need it. For anyone in the Twin Lakes Area looking to adopt a pet, a number of furry friends can be found at the Human Society of North Central Arkansas in Mountain Home. Shelter Manager Carolyn Carter says they have monthly specials, as well as a number of services always available to those looking to adopt.

The Humane Society of North Cenral Arkansas began in 1976 and is a non-profit organization incorporated in the state of Arkansas. The purpose and policy of the society is to protect, care for and reduce the population of neglected, homeless, unwanted and abused animals, with particular emphasis on the canine and feline population, within Baxter County and 25 miles of the surrounding area. The society operates a shelter where all animals receive adequate food, water, shelter, and medical attention, with the goal to place all animals in permanent and loving homes.
