Left Banke drummer George Cameron dead at 70

The Left Banke in 2012; George Cameron, center (Daniel Coston)George Cameron, drummer of the 1960s baroque pop act The Left Banke, died Sunday, June 24, according to a post on the group’s official Facebook fan page by founding guitarist Tom Finn.

An obituary on ObitTree.com reports that Cameron passed away from cancer at age 70 at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.

The Left Banke is best known for the 1967 hits “Walk Away Renée” and “Pretty Ballerina,” which reached #5 and #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. Cameron played drums and contributed backing and some lead vocals to all three of The Left Banke’s studio albums.

Cameron, Finn and a new lineup of musicians played a series of Left Banke reunion shows in 2011 and 2012. The band’s original keyboard player, Michael Brown, made a guest appearance at one New York City show in 2012; he died in 2015 at age 65.

In January 2018, it was announced via The Left Banke’s official Facebook page that Cameron and the group’s original lead singer, Steve Martin Caro, had been rehearsing together for some possible new shows, but that plan sadly did not come to fruition.

A pre-funeral visitation for Cameron will be held on Thursday, June 28, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. ET at the McHoul Funeral Home in Hopewell Junction, New York.

A graveside funeral service is scheduled for Friday, June 29 at 11 a.m. ET at St. Denis Cemetery in Hopewell Junction.
