RhinoThe Doors have announced details of the latest installment of their 50th anniversary reissue campaign: an expanded and remastered edition of their third studio album, Waiting for the Sun, which will be released on September 14.

The collection will feature two CDs and one vinyl LP. One CD and the vinyl disc will boast a newly remastered stereo mix of the album created by longtime Doors engineer Bruce Botnick using the original master tapes.

The second CD features 14 previously unreleased recordings: recently rediscovered rough mixes of nine of the album’s 11 tracks, plus five live performances from a September 1968 concert in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Botnick says he prefers some of the rough mixes “to the finals, as they represent all of the elements and additional background vocals, different sensibilities on balances, and some intangible roughness, all of which are quite attractive and refreshing.”

Waiting for the Sun was released in July 1968, and became the band’s first album to reach #1 on the Billboard 200.  It features the chart-topping hit “Hello, I Love You,” the top 40 single “The Unknown Soldier,” and other memorable tunes like “Love Street,” “Summer’s Almost Gone” and the classic-rock radio staple “Five to One.” The album has sold more than one million copies in the U.S.

The Waiting for the Sun reissue also will be released digitally and via streaming services.

In advance of the reissue, The Doors will release a limited-edition seven-inch vinyl single featuring rare mono mixes of “Hello, I Love You” backed with “Love Street” on August 3 — 50 years to the day that “Hello, I Love You” hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
