The show, a re-imagining of the hit ’70s sitcom of the same name, follows three generations of a Cuban-American family: Penelope Alvarez, a newly single mom; her two teens, Alex and Elena; and her old-school mother, Lydia. Estefan sings the show’s theme song, but she’ll finally appear on its upcoming third season.
“So excited to announce that I’ll finally be guest starring on @odaatnetflix,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’ll be playing Mirtha, Lydia’s baby sister and arch-nemesis. I’m coming for you, Alvarez family!”
Entertainment legend Rita Moreno, who plays Lydia, responded to the news by tweeting, “CAN NOT WAIT!” As Vulture points out, Estefan is 60 and Moreno is 86. That’s quite an age gap between sisters, but we assume all will be explained when the third season of One Day at a Time airs next year.
A few years ago, Gloria made a memorable guest appearance on Fox’s Glee, as the mother of Naya Rivera‘s character Santana Lopez. In addition, she’s appeared in the movies Music of the Heart and For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story.
