Janet Jackson to be named BMI Icon on August 30

Credit: Solaiman FazelJanet Jackson is adding to her ever-expanding trophy collection with yet another prestigious honor: the BMI Icon Award, handed out annually by performing-rights organization BMI.

Ms. Jackson will receive the award August 30 at the 2018 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta.

“As one of the most influential entertainers of all time, Janet Jackson’s artistry and music transcends generations and has inspired many with messages of empowerment that can be heard throughout her rich catalog of music,” says BMI Vice President Catherine Brewton.

Brewton adds, “She is the definition of an icon, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor.”

Past recipients of the award include James BrownPatti LaBelleAl GreenNile Rodgers and Snoop Dogg.

Jackson has sold more than 160 million records worldwide, has seven #1 albums, eleven American Music Awards and five Grammys. The 52-year-old entertainer is the only artist in Billboard‘s history to have three different albums — ControlJanet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 and janet. — each produced five or more top-10 hits on the Hot 100 chart.

Jackson also joins Bruce SpringsteenBarbra Streisand and U2 as the only artists to earn #1 albums in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. 

The “Rhythm Nation” singer received the Billboard ICON Award on May 20, and the first-ever Radio Disney Music Impact award on June 23.

Janet will kick off her 2018 State of the World tour on July 8 at the Essence Festival in New Orleans. The trek continues through August 12 in San Francisco.
