Over the weekend, a Twin Lakes Area man reported catching an American eel in the Jimmy Creek area of Bull Shoals Lake.

Fisheries Biologist Cody Wyatt, of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, says the eel could be the new record-setter for the state.

Eels are not uncommon in the area. Wyatt says eels are seen from time to time in angler reports on the Buffalo River and Crooked Creek, but the last time he saw one in person was seven or eight years ago. What makes this catch so extraordinary is the size of the eel and that it somehow ended up in Bull Shoals Lake.

Wyatt says the man was trot-lining for catfish using bream for bait, bluegill and green sunfish, when he caught the eel.

The eel is being displayed at the James A. Gaston’s Visitor Center.
