Longtime official Jim Magie dies

The world of high school, college and youth athletics is mourning the loss of a longtime official. Jim Magie of Perryville, formerly of Mountain Home, has died.

Magie spent nearly 50 years of his life officiating games of several different sports, and he was inducted into the Arkansas Officials Association Hall of Fame nearly two years ago. Former coach and official Lou Wood says there is probable no one in Arkansas who has called more games than Magie.

Mountain Home Kindergarten Principal and former athletic director Janet Wood says he loved being on the field and the court watching the athletes succeed, and he was willing to make himself available when he was needed.

Magie called several games in the Twin Lakes Area while he was employed at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Mountain Home Project Office. His son, Jimmy Magie, is a member of the MHHS Athletic Hall of Honor as a multi-sport athlete.

He moved to his hometown of Perryville nearly ten years ago. Lou Wood says Magie continued to officiate even as his health declined.

Funeral services for 77-year-old Jim Magie will be Wednesday morning at 10:00 at Harris Funeral Home in Morrilton. Visitation will be from 9:00 until the time of the service.
