Long-awaited landfill closure just days away

The long-awaited official closure of the NABORS landfill in northern Baxter County is just days away.

Melinda Caldwell, Ozark Mountain Solid Waste District Executive Director, says about a half inch of a sand/polymer mix is being placed on top of the closure turf, a process going a little slower than expected.

The closure turf is designed to blend with the natural landscape.

With the official closing of the landfill under the guidance of the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), a 30-year monitoring and management process begins for the Ozark Mountain Solid Waste District. Caldwell says the district will be responsible for monitoring leachate and methane production.

The original price tag for closing the landfill was about $6 million. However, ADEQ officials have said bids for services came in much higher than anticipated, and the cost could go as high as $20 million.

Earlier this month, the Ozark Mountain Solid Waste Board of Directors said it will ask ADEQ for an itemized list of expenditures the agency paid to permanently close the NABORS landfill. The Harrison Daily Times reported it is not known if the board will receive the information.
