Filing period opens Friday for municipal office candidates

The filing period opens Friday for those seeking to run as independent candidates for municipal-level offices during the November general election.

Baxter County and Circuit Clerk Canda Reese says the required petition forms are available from her office.

To be considered valid, signatures must be those of active registered voters in the city where the candidate is seeking office.

The filing period for independent candidates seeking municipal-level offices closes at noon on August 17th.

In Baxter County, the seats for mayor will be open in all cities, Big Flat, Briarcliff, Cotter, Gassville, Lakeview, Mountain Home, Norfork and Salesville.

In Big Flat, Briarcliff, Cotter, Gassville, Lakeview, Norfork and Salesville, the mayor and city clerk positions alternate four-year terms. As a result, the city clerk positions will be open in 2020.

In all cities, with the exception of Briarcliff, all council positions are two-year terms and are open in 2018. In Briarcliff, the city council has alternating four-year terms.
