ABC/Randy HolmesKacey Musgraves may not score crossover pop hits like Florida Georgia Line and Maren Morris, but she’s certainly done her share of crossover touring.
The “High Horse” singer has hit the road with Katy Perry and recently wrapped up a tour with British pop star Harry Styles, but she’s also opened for Little Big Town, Willie Nelson, and Kenny Chesney. That’s the way she likes it, she tells Grammy.com.
“I love many sides of music. And you won’t find somebody who loves traditional country music more than me. I love it so much, but I love so many other things, too. So to be able to keep a foot in that world and a foot in the other things in the worlds that inspire me is really gratifying,” she explains.
“From day one, I always wanted to be the kind of artist that could play a country festival and then turn around and play Bonnaroo or Newport Folk or whatever it is. Music is music…somehow it works.”
Kacey admits that some people’s reaction to her plans to open for Harry Styles was, “This tour doesn’t really make that much sense.”
“But in the end, it ended up being just an amazing pairing and really fun,” she counters. “And it just goes to show you that a good song is a good song. It doesn’t really matter what category it falls into.”
Kacey will continue her genre-hopping ways by performing at Farm Aid 2018 this September with Willie, Chris Stapleton, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, and Dave Matthews.
