Arkansas first congressional district candidate Chintan Desai visited Mountain Home this week as apart of his “30 Counties in 30 Days” campaign. During the campaign, Desai is visiting each of the 30 counties in the first congressional district. He is challenging incumbent Congressman Rick Crawford.

During his visit to Baxter County, Desai told KTLO, Classic Hits, and The Boot news his parents’ decision to immigrate to the United States was what inspired him to run for office.

The first district seat has been held by a republican for the past eight years. Despite this fact, Desai, running on the Democrat ticket, says he doesn’t think the election is really a red or blue issue, but rather one of being heard.

Desai’s parents moved to the United States in the early 1980s. Following his high school graduation, Desai moved to Helena from California to teach fifth grade social studies as a part of the Teach For America program. Since making the move, Desai has lived in Helena for eight years and continues to be involved in local education. This is Desai’s first time running for office.
