A project to improve fish habitat on the lower end of Bull Shoals Lake was completed earlier this year by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. The large-scale habitat project resulted in the replinishing of 86 percent of the lake’s existing 146 natural habitat sites between Ozark Isle and the Bull Shoals Dam.

Game and Fish District Fisheries Supervisor Jeremy Risley says the purpose of the project is to improve the living habitat of the fish on the lower end of the lake.

Nearly 2,000 man hours were spent on the project to replinish these sites where the trees were deteriorating. Cedar, oak, sycamore, elm, persimmon, ash and hickory trees were used, and each site received an average of five trees.

The project was completed in two phases. Risley says the first phase of the project began after Thanksgiving.

Risley adds the commission originally scheduled the project to begin in the spring of last year. However, the project was delayed due to uncontrollable weather conditions, and they decided to work on a similar project on Lake Chicot.

Another similar project is expected to begin this fall on Norfork Lake.
