School officials across Baxter and Marion counties are celebrating the beginning of the academic year with reports of strong enrollment numbers.

Dr. Jake Long, Superintendent for Mountain Home Public Schools, says first-day enrollment stood at 3,932. That number is up 73 over last year and an increase of 123 from two years ago.

Long says the increased enrollment is a good sign for the area.

At Cotter, Superintendent Vanessa Thomas-Jones reports a first-day enrollment increase of 36 students over last year. This year’s enrollment stands at 769.

At Norfork, Superintendent Mike Seay says the school year is off to a great start with 428 students, an uptick from last year’s 426.

At Flippin, Superintendent Kelvin Hudson is expecting an enrollment increase of about 30 students over last year. Hudson says last year’s number was up about 30 over the previous year.

Like Dr. Long in Mountain Home, Hudson attributes the growth at Flippin Schools to the increased opportunities for employment, saying in the past, families have attempted to move to the area, but jobs were not available.

At Yellville-Summit, Superintendent Wes Henderson reports first-day enrollment stands at 779, up 40 students over this time in 2017.

All of the superintendents caution the first-day numbers will fluctuate over the next couple of weeks.
