A formal groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of the Baxter County Detention Center is set for Friday afternoon at 2:00.

Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says most of the construction bids have already been awarded, and work on the expansion project is expected to begin next week.

In anticipation of construction getting underway, sheriff’s Office personnel have installed a live feed camera showing
the area where construction will take place, allowing the public to monitor progress. This live feed camera can be accessed by the public from the sheriff’s office website at https://www.baxtercountysheriff.com/jailexpansion jail expansion.

Sheriff Montgomery says the public is welcomed to attend Friday’s groundbreaking ceremony. County officials and representatives from the general contractor will be on hand.

Once construction begins, the area between the sheriff’s administration offices and the detention center area will likely be congested with construction equipment, materials, and vehicles. The roadway between the two buildings may be closed at times due to that congestion.

The jail expansion is being financed from revenue being derived from a temporary one cent sales tax approved by the voters of Baxter County. Collection of the temporary tax began in April and will continue through the end of September. The temporary tax will be immediately replaced by a permanent one-quarter cent sales tax to fund the continued operation of the detention center. Voters also overwhelmingly approved the one-quarter cent sales tax.
