Expansion of BC jail to begin following groundbreaking Friday

Expansion of the $4.2 million Baxter County Detention Center is expected to begin next week following a formal groundbreaking ceremony Friday afternoon.

In anticipation of construction getting underway, sheriff’s Office personnel have installed a live feed camera showing the area where construction will take place, allowing the public to monitor progress. This live feed camera can be accessed by the public from the sheriff’s office website here.

Once construction begins, the area between the sheriff’s administration offices and the detention center area will likely be congested with construction equipment, materials, and vehicles. The roadway between the two buildings may be closed at times due to that congestion.

The jail expansion is being financed from revenue being derived from a temporary one cent sales tax approved by the voters of Baxter County. Collection of the temporary tax began in April and will continue through the end of September. The temporary tax will be immediately replaced by a permanent one-quarter cent sales tax to fund the continued operation of the detention center. Voters also overwhelmingly approved the one-quarter cent sales tax
