The Mountain Home Police Department will partner with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for a high-visibility national enforcement campaign “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.” The campaign aims to get drunk drivers off the roads and help save lives and will run Friday until September 3rd.

During the campaign, local law enforcement will show zero tolerance for drunk driving. There will be increased state and national messages about the dangers of driving impaired, as well as enforcement and increased officers on the road.

According to NHSTA, 10,487 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in 2016. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), 21 percent of all traffic fatalities for Arkansas in 2016 were a result of drunk-driving.

The Mountain Home Police Department recommended safe alternatives to drinking and driving, including designating a sober driver, utilizing public transportation or a ride sharing service and/or downloading the NHSTA’s SaferRide mobile app, which allows users to call a taxi or a predetermined friend and identifies the user’s location for pickup. Additionally, if friends are drunk, the department asks to not let them drive, but rather take their keys away and make arrangements for them to get home safely.

The Mountain Home Police also ask those who see a drunk driver to call 870-425-6336.
