TRUMANN, Ark. (AP) – An Arkansas prosecutor says a northeast Arkansas police chief who fatally shot a man in an exchange of gunfire in which the chief was wounded was justified in using deadly force.

Little Rock television station KATV reports prosecutor Scott Ellington said Saturday that Trumann Police Chief Chad Henson was acting in self-defense when he returned fire and killed Johnny Kelley. Henson, who was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, suffered a non-life threatening wound in the exchange.

State police say the shooting occurred on Aug. 3 after Henson was contacted by Kelley, who asked him come to his home near Trumann. When Henson approached the residence, Kelley shot Henson, who returned fire.

Kelley was pronounced dead at the scene. It was not revealed why Kelley asked Henson to come to his home.
