SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP)   A homeless man has been sentenced to life in prison plus 75 years for killing a Springfield woman who had befriended him.

The Springfield News-Leader reports 42-year-old Andrew Jensen was sentenced Friday for second-degree murder in the 2015 death of 48-year-old Kathi Jones.

Police say Jones was stabbed and beaten to death in November 2015 in her Springfield home. Her body was found underneath a mattress days after her death.

Prosecutors say Jones had befriended Jensen and sometimes let him stay in her van. Investigators say Jensen killed Jones in order to steal prescription drugs.

Jones was a grandmother who grew up on the West Coast before moving to Springfield.
