BENTON, Mo. (AP) _ Police records show a Missouri deputy drove the wrong way down Interstate 55 to join a pursuit before crashing his patrol vehicle.

Scott County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Ryan Dennis tells The Southeast Missourian that sheriff’s deputy James Britton was trying to assist the Cape Girardeau Police Department in a pursuit on Aug. 19th.

Reports filed by the Missouri State Highway Patrol show Britton lost control of his vehicle at the top of an overpass near Benton. The highway patrol investigation cites excessive speed, improper turning and driving the wrong way as factors in the crash.

Dennis says Britton was traveling at about 118 miles per hour just minutes before the crash.

Britton sustained minor injuries. Dennis says he’s since resigned.
