LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) _ University of Arkansas at Monticello officials say the school has received a surprise $6 million donation, the largest private gift in its history.

The school’s chancellor, Karla Hughes, said Friday the donation was from the trust of the late Merle and Deloris Peterson, who lived in Dumas.

Jeff Weaver, a school spokesman, says the Petersons were committed to higher education in southeast Arkansas. He says they’d established endowed scholarships at Monticello in the 1980s that helped dozens of students attend college.

Hughes said the university has not yet decided how it will use the unrestricted donation.

According to an online obituary, Deloris Peterson died in February at age 100. She and her husband ran a car dealership in Dumas, where they had lived since 1939.
