Jason Tomes of Mountain Home entered a no contest plea to charges in two criminal cases during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday, including one in which he was allegedly weighing “dope” while driving.

Formal sentencing for the 29-year-old Tomes was continued until September 27th.

Tomes had been scheduled to go on trial this month to face charges he had stolen a vehicle in California, but was arrested on drug charges before he could make it to the courtroom in the original case.

In the probable cause affidavit dealing with the vehicle theft, Tomes initially said he borrowed the vehicle, but had “borrowed it for too long.” The car theft came to light when Mountain Home police investigated a complaint of a vehicle which was parked on the sidewalk at a location along Post Oak Road near the Mountain Home Kindergarten. Officers discovered the vehicle had been stolen in California in mid-December last year. According to information received on the reported California theft, the suspect was listed as “Jason” with the last name of the person unknown at the time of the initial police report. Tomes was arrested in that case in February.

Early this month, Tomes was stopped by Mountain Home police for driving a vehicle on Cardinal Street observed crossing the centerline several times. A search of the vehicle was undertaken after the stop, and a white crystalline substance field-testing positive for methamphetamine was found, along with a set of digital scales.

A passenger in Tomes’ vehicle told officers the car crossed the centerline because Tomes was “weighing the dope while driving.”
