INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) _ An 18-year-old from Oak Grove has been charged in the fatal shooting of a woman in Independence.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker says David Harris was charged Wednesday for second-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.

Fox4KC reports Harris is a suspect in the death of 20-year-old Mary Schmitz.

Police say Independence police went to apartment complex Tuesday after receiving reports of shots being fired. According to court records, officers heard yelling and saw the victim on the floor in the dining room. A 21-year-old man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound. A dog in the apartment was killed.

Court documents indicate Harris told police Schmitz was shot while he and the other victim were fighting.
