Jason Tomes of Mountain Home was sentenced to six years in prison, with three suspended, during a session of Baxter County Circuit Court Thursday. The 29-year-old Tomes had entered a no contest plea to charges in two criminal cases Sept. 13th, with formal sentencing continued until Thursday.

He was scheduled to go on trial this month on charges he had stolen a truck in California and for being in possession of a drug field testing positive for methamphetamine.

In the probable cause affidavit dealing with the vehicle theft, Tomes initially said he had borrowed the vehicle but admitted he had “borrowed it for too long.” The vehicle theft came to light when Mountain Home police investigated a complaint of a vehicle parked on the sidewalk along Post Oak Road.

Officers discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen in California in mid-December last year. According to information received on the reported California theft, the suspect was listed only as “Jason” with the last name of the person unknown at the time of the report.

Early in September, Tomes was stopped by Mountain Home police for driving a vehicle on Cardinal Street that had crossed the centerline several times. A search of the vehicle was undertaken after the stop, and a white crystalline substance field testing positive for methamphetamine was found, along with a set of digital scales.

A passenger in Tomes’ vehicle said it had crossed the centerline because Tomes was “weighing the dope” while driving.
