INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (AP) _ Jackson County officials say a second person in the county has died from the West Nile virus.

The department announced the death Tuesday but provided no details.

The first death in the county from the virus was reported Sept. 19th.

The virus is most commonly spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.

Jackson County Health Department Health Director Bridgette Shaffer says mosquitoes will remain active until the first hard frost.

Shaffer says people should use insect repellent, wear long sleeve shirts and pants and stay indoors between dusk and dawn. Areas of standing water also should be drained, if possible.
