CARTHAGE, Mo. (AP) _ A city in southwestern Missouri recently left without a hometown newspaper now has two publications looking to serve the community.

The Joplin Globe reports two newspapers are vying to cover local news in Carthage following the closure of The Carthage Press, which had been a news source in the city for more than 130 years.

The Carthage Chronicle launched shortly after The Carthage Press closed without warning in August. The Chronicle is published by Sarcoxie Publishing Co. and offers subscriptions as well as free limited mailings.

Rush-Hoover Media Group announced this week The Carthage Press will return but under local control. The newspaper was formerly owned by Gatehouse Media in New York. The now locally-run newspaper will be delivered by mail weekly for free to every Carthage resident.
