Credit: Status SemigraphFounding Grateful Dead band mates Bob Weir and Bill Kreutzmann will help ring in the New Year on the Hawaiian island of Kauai by playing together at a benefit concert called Rising Up to Paradise, scheduled for December 31 at Crazy Rooster Ranch.

Weir and Kreutzmann will perform in a newly formed group called The Big Swell, which also features Meters bassist George Porter Jr., Timbuk 3 drummer Wally Ingram and a number of musicians who have played in Grateful Dead spinoff groups: keyboardist Jeff Chimenti of Dead & Company, guitarist Steve Kimock of The Other Ones and bassist Robin Sylvester of RatDog.

The concert will also feature sets by The Dirty Knobs — the side band of founding Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and current Fleetwood Mac guitarist Mike Campbell — as well as folk-blues veteran Taj Mahal and local act Island Grass.

The event will raise money for The Hanalei Initiative and Earthjustice, two nonprofit charities focused on environmental issues and promoting healthy communities.

Tickets for the Rising Up to Paradise: New Year’s Eve on Kauai concert go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, October 31, at 7 a.m. local time.

VIP and Super VIP tickets also will be available. Those purchasing the latter will be able to attend a private sunset acoustic set by Weir, Kreutzmann and Steve Kimock.
