The City of Mountain Home’s wastewater department is conducting smoke tests on the city’s sewer lines.

Water and Sewer Director Alma Clark says the testing began Tuesday and will continue at various times during November and possibly into December.

Those in the areas being tested will see smoke rising from the outside vents of residences and businesses during the test, a sign the plumbing is vented properly.

Clark says smoke experienced inside a residence or business could indicate faulty plumbing, improper connections or dry traps on plumbing. The smoke is harmless and non-staining and will exit quickly by opening a window or ventilating structures.

Those experiencing smoke indoors from under sinks or any fixtures should contact a plumber to inspect these areas.

Clark says faulty plumbing is a sign sewer gases could be entering the building, which can be harmful to the occupants’ health, if not corrected.

The City of Mountain Home is also conducting these tests to locate leaks to the system to be repaired reducing operating costs and utilities to the system.
