Credit: Marc HauserJohn Mellencamp has released an official video for his new recording of the civil rights anthem “Eyes on the Prize,” which will appear on his forthcoming covers compilation Other People’s Stuff.
The clip, which you can watch on Mellencamp’s official website and YouTube channel, has a politically driven theme and is timed to coincide with the midterm elections.
The black-and-white video has been treated to resemble old grainy film. It features clips of Mellencamp performing the song along with provocative segments that show an American flag blowing in the wind, a jail cell, two escaped prisoners handcuffed together running through the desert, a border patrol vehicle driving by a border fence and a child playing with a toy handgun.
As previously reported, “Eyes on the Prize” is the sole new recording on Other People’s Stuff, which is due out on December 7. Mellencamp also performed the song live in 2010 at the White House as part of the “Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement” event.
Other People’s Stuff also features nine previously released renditions of other artists’ songs that Mellencamp covered for his own studio albums, tribute records and other projects.
The studio version of “Eyes on the Prize” is available now as a digital single and via streaming services.
