Evamore RecordsRolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood and Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason are among the musicians who have contributed to a new EP titled One More Yard that pays tribute to young soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War I while also seeking to raise awareness of today’s fight against cancer.

Wood and Mason have teamed up with Brian Eno, singers Sinead O’Connor and Imelda May, and actor Cillian Murphy to record the song “One More Yard,” which was inspired by letters written by a young Irish soldier who was killed in 1917. The EP, which features multiple versions of the tune, is available now as a digital download and via streaming services.

The recording is part of a project titled Evamore that was founded and is being curated by Professor Sir Chris Evans, a scientific entrepreneur who has created a new Cancer Awareness Trust that will provide clinical advice to people suffering from the disease. Evans has written a collection of songs utilizing the words of World War I soldiers that will be released as a full album with the next half year.

“It was incredibly moving to see how the words of soldiers 100 years ago were so similar to those of young people suffering from cancer today,” says Evans in a statement. “We can only now honor the sacrifice of those a century ago but there is so much to be done to help those who are locked into the greatest struggle of their lives as they confront cancer.”

Adds Wood, “As someone who has had to deal with cancer, I am delighted to be part of this new awareness initiative — it’s a great idea backed by some brilliant scientific people.”
