Girls just wanna have trophies: Cyndi Lauper to receive Icon Award at “Billboard” Women in Music event

Credit: Gavin BondCyndi Lauper will be honored with Billboard‘s Icon Award at the publication’s annual Women in Music Event, taking place December 6 in New York City.

“The entire world recognizes the power of Cyndi Lauper’s pop music, and just as crucially, she has used her undeniable talent to soar beyond music, create positive change in modern society and become a true Icon,” said Billboard Editorial Director Jason Lipshutz in a statement.

A Grammy, Tony and Emmy-winning star, Lauper has scored eight top-10 hits in her career, appeared in movies and on TV, and has written a hit Broadway musical.  A noted humanitarian, she established the True Colors Fund 10 years ago. The charity works to end homelessness among LGBTQ youth.

Cyndi’s spent much of this year on tour with Rod Stewart.  She also is working on a new musical based on the hit movie Working Girl.

Also being honored at the Women in Music event are pop superstar and Billboard‘s Woman of the Year Ariana Grande, as well as R&B singer and actress Janelle Monáe, who will receive the Trailblazer Award.

The 13th annual Women in Music event and red-carpet pre-show will be broadcast live on Twitter, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET on December 6.  More honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.
