Canadian folk-rock great Gordon Lightfoot turns 80 on Saturday

Courtesy of Gordon LightfootCanadian folk-rock legend Gordon Lightfoot celebrates his 80th birthday on Saturday. The lauded singer/songwriter’s long career dates back to the early 1960s, but he experienced his biggest success during the 1970s.

Lightfoot scored four top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, “If You Could Read My Mind,” “Carefree Highway,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” and the chart-topping “Sundown.”

Gordon was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1986, the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012. In 2003, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honor.

In 2014, he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by SOCAN, the performing-rights organization that distributes royalties to Canadian artists. Over the years, Lightfoot has received 16 Juno Awards, Canada’s equivalent to the Grammy.

Gordon currently is winding down a 2018 tour of his home country, which is mapped out through a November 24 concert in London, Ontario. He’ll celebrate his birthday Saturday with a sold-out show in his hometown of Orillia, Ontario.
