The Mountain Home Police Department is reminding motorists to “Click It or Ticket” for the Thanksgiving holiday. They will join other law enforcement agencies across the country to team up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to work toward reducing the number of fatalities occurring when vehicle passengers fail to buckle their seatbelts.

During the 2016 Thanksgiving period between November 23rd and 28th, 341 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in motor vehicle accidents throughout the United States, and 49 percent were not wearing seat belts. This statistic represents a decrease in seatbelt use compared to the same weekend a year earlier when 52 percent of those killed in traffic crashes were unrestrained. Nighttime proved to be even more deadly with 55 percent of Thanksgiving weekend crashes occurring at night.

Participating law enforcement will be taking a no-excuse approach to motorists without a seat belt on and will be writing citations. In Mountain Home, the law requires all front seat passengers and children to be buckled up. Violations are punishable by a $90 fine, and that cost increases for child passengers.
