The American Red Cross is facing a severe blood shortage and has issued an immediate call for blood and platelet donations. The Red Cross says blood and platelet donors are needed to avoid delays in lifesaving medical care for patients.

Joe Zydlo is the external communications manager for Red Cross and says they have seen a big decline in donations the last couple of months that has caused the urgent appeal.

Zydlo says donors should drink plenty of water the day they give blood and eat a snack or meal prior to the donation.

Several blood drives are scheduled in the area Tuesday including at Ranger Boats from 8:00 to 1:00 and the Fulton County Hospital from noon to 4:00. On Wednesday, you can donate blood at the Red Cross Mountain Home Blood Donation Center at 1041 Highland Circle, suite 22, from 11:00 to 5:15.
