Izard County beats Dora in battle between highly-ranked teams

Saturday’s basketball action in the Marvin Newton Classic at Viola included a boys’ matchup between the top-ranked team in Arkansas’s Class 1A and the second-ranked team in Missouri’s Class 1. Izard County handed Dora its first loss of the season with an 81-54 decision. Coby Everett led the Cougars with 33 points, and Justus Cooper added 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. The Falcons fall to 8-1 on the year, and Izard County improves to 17-2.
Cotter’s boys were victorious in the first game of the day. The Warriors squeaked by Mammoth Spring 45-44.
Cotter did not fare as well in girls’ action as they lost to Izard County 43-24. The Lady Cougars were led by Ashlynn Bratcher with 14 points, and Bethany Simmons chipped in 13. Izard County is now 12-4 on the year.
Viola’s girls came away with an easy win. The host Lady Longhorns doubled up Guy-Perkins 56-28.

There was plenty of of other local basketball Saturday including Flippin hosting the Billy Ply Classic. In girls’ action, Norfork fell to Melbourne 67-61, Bergman defeated Jonesboro’s junior varsity squad 57-44, and the Jonesboro varsity team topped Thayer 49-45. On the boys’ side, the host Bobcats beat Crowley’s Ridge Academy 70-60.

The area had mixed results in the North Arkansas College Border War Shootout at the Pioneer Pavilion in Harrison. In boys’ action, Valley Springs was edged out by Strafford 77-75, and Harrison fell to Ozark 71-63. Omaha’s girls fared better as they defeated Bradleyville 61-54.

Mountain Home’s freshmen teams split their games in the Cave City Classic on Saturday.
The Junior Bombers advanced to Wednesday’s title game on the boys’ bracket after beating the host Junior Cavemen 40-35. Luke Proctor was Mountain Home’s top scorer with 12 points, and Dodge Harris had 11.
It was a different result for the Junior Lady Bombers as they fell to Highland. Mountain Home drops to 7-6 on the season.
Both Mountain Home teams will play at West Memphis East on Monday.
