Eagle Awareness Weekend set for Friday, Saturday

Eagle Awareness Weekend is back at Bull Shoals-White River State Park this Friday and Saturday. The public is invited to see if the bald eagle touches their soul. In years past, most visitors to the event have spotted bald eagles in the wild.

This year’s guest speakers will include local nature photographer and author Tim Ernst as he highlights his work titled “Arkansas – Ten Years of Nature Photography in the Natural State.” Another speaker will be master falconer Howard Davis of the Raptor Rehab of Central Arkansas in El Paso and the Little Rock Zoo. Davis will showcase a live mature bald eagle and other birds of prey all within arm’s reach.

According to park officials, the bald eagle is not only the country’s symbol, but it’s also symbolic of humans’ ability to save and preserve species. The Ozarks play host to over 100 bald eagles each winter migrating to and through the local prime eagle wintering ground.

The Eagle Awareness Event is an opportunity for area residents and tourists to get out and see eagles, other birds of prey and migratory birds in the wild as expert rangers, naturalists and park interpreters take visitors within viewing distance. Most spectators have spotted eagles in the wild during the event, and other common sightings include ospreys, waterfowl, herons, loons, owls and other winter wildlife.
