The Los Angeles Police Department is blaming the incident on noises that raised suspicions of a possible active shooter, but police now say there is no evidence of any shooting.

Earlier on Sunday, police cleared several terminals of passengers and the airport temporarily halted incoming traffic.

The airport now confirms that all terminals have been cleared, and that passengers are being re-screened and allowed to re-enter. Security lines are reported to be backing up around the terminals.

“Due to initial reports of an active shooter in Terminal eight at LAX, passengers in several LAX terminals self-evacuated onto the tarmac and rushed through federal security screening without being properly screened,” the airport explained in a statement.

LAX said it halted incoming traffic on the south runway complex shortly after 9 p.m. but that it was cleared before 9:30 p.m., with flight operations resuming.

Reports of a possible active-shooter situation at the airport first surfaced just after 9 p.m. local time.

LAX closed incoming air traffic, according to the airport’s official Twitter account.
