A Mountain Home man is in the Baxter County Detention Center on several charges including the alleged assault of a police officer. According to Mountain Home Police Investigator Jay Volkman, 49-year-old Jimmy Bohannon was arrested Friday night on a Class D felony count of second-degree battery, a Class B felony count of residential burglary, a Class B misdemeanor count of fleeing and Class A misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental operations and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bond is set at $53,090.

Volkman says Mountain Home Police Sergeant Robert McCoy was en route to Eighth Street to assist another police officer on a traffic stop. Sergeant McCoy noticed a male subject hiding behind a fence looking toward the officer. McCoy was still in his vehicle when he approached the subject who then ran across the street. When McCoy stopped the male and asked for his name and age, the subject allegedly said he was Tom Watson and 26 years old, but the sergeant believed the man appeared to be closer to age 50.

McCoy put his vehicle in park, exited the vehicle and pursued the subject who fled on foot. McCoy caught the suspect in a residential driveway, but he was able to get away. As the chase continued, Sergeant McCoy unsuccessfully attempted to deploy his taser when it malfunctioned. McCoy chased the subject into the back yard of the same residence and tackled him into a fence. The subject is alleged to have elbowed McCoy in the eye and struck him in the face and forehead several times leaving a small laceration below his eye. The sergeant lost his duty belt, but he was able to hit the suspect once in the back of his head.

The male broke free again and ran toward Foster Street, and McCoy found his radio and called for help. He then continued the pursuit, but he lost sight of the suspect as he entered the back yard of a residence on Foster Street. The home owner was standing outside and said the suspect may have run into the house. The owner went inside, and Sergeant McCoy says he heard people yelling inside the house saying, “Get out of here.” When McCoy entered the residence, he allegedly observed the owner holding the suspect at gunpoint in a bedroom closet, and the suspect yelled, “Just shoot me.” After he refused to follow McCoy’s order to get on the ground, he charged at the sergeant and attempted to push the door shut on him. With the assistance of two other males in the house, McCoy was able to take the suspect into custody.

The subject was later identified as Jimmy Bohannon, and officers learned he had three outstanding arrest warrants. Photographs were taken of Sergeant McCoy’s injuries, and he was treated and released from Baxter Regional Medical Center.

Bohannon is due to appear in Baxter County Circuit Court.
