CBS SUNDAY MORNINGBruce Springsteen opens up about his struggles with depression in a forthcoming interview on CBS Sunday Morning, airing 9 a.m. ET Sunday.
“It lasted for more than a year and then it would slip away. Then it would come back for a year and a half,” Springsteen tells interviewer Anthony Mason.
“It sneaks up on you. I got to where I didn’t want to get out of bed, you know? And you’re not behaving well at home, and you’re tough on everybody,” he said of his bouts with depression. “Hopefully not the kids. I always try to hide it from the kids.”
Springsteen, who turns 67 next week, says the condition hit particularly hard as he entered his sixties, and credits his wife. E Street Band member Patti Scialfa, got him through it.
“Patti really had to work with me through it,” he said. “Her strength and the love she had was very important.”
In the interview Springsteen also discusses his difficult relationship with his father; his childhood in Freehold, New Jersey; the passing of saxophonist Clarence Clemons and how his memoir, Born to Run, came to be.
Springsteen’s book arrives in stores September 27.
