State Champion! Congratulations to Lane Alexander! Lane won the State Championship in the 113 pound weight class at the state wrestling tournament held at the Jack Stephens center on the UALR campus. Lane is a tremendous athlete, and he is equally tremendous as an outstanding young man and role model. Our wrestling team finished 5th in Class 6A and the majority of our team is made up of freshmen.
The Bombers avenged an earlier loss at Marion and the Lady Bombers made it a clean sweep to pick up key 6A conference wins. The Lady Bombers shot lights out at the junior high hitting 10 of 13 three pointers in the first half alone. Austin Jacobelli hit a free throw with four seconds left to lift the Bombers to a one point victory. Both teams have secured a spot in the state tournament which starts March 4 in Siloam Springs.
After losing by 35 points to Cabot last month, the Lady Bombers rallied late to get within 4 points but narrowly lost by 6. The Bombers lost by 2 as Cabot got an offensive rebound and put-back with no time remaining. Since Cabot is 7A, these had no effect on the seeding.
Tomorrow we will have Senior night and recognize our seniors and their parents in basketball, cheer, and dance between varsity games. The junior varsity boys will play at 5:00 followed by the varsity girls at 6:00 and varsity boys about 7:30. This will be our last home game of the season. On Friday, we will travel to West Memphis.
On a personal note, I would like to thank all of our fans for your outstanding support. This has been a very successful basketball season for both teams and both have improved tremendously since the beginning of the season. We hope to see all Tuesday night and help us say farewell to this outstanding groups of seniors.
State bowling was postponed last week and will be played this Wednesday in Jonesboro. Good luck to both teams.
State swim will be held at UALR this Saturday. We wish good luck to all of our swimmers.
Both of our junior high teams enter the district tournament as the last place seed each year – simply because of travel and we do not play in the round robin. The junior Bombers were eliminated in the first round of the district tournament in Marion by second seeded Annie Camp. The junior Lady Bombers beat number 2 seed MacArthur, number 3 seed Annie Camp, and will be playing Marion in the finals this afternoon at 5:00. Best of luck to Coach Brenda Yancey, Coach Josh Low, and the junior Lady Bombers.
The Bomber Booster Club will meet today at 11:30 at Holy Smokes. Everyone is invited to attend.
