A Twin Lakes Area educator is one of the regional finalists for the 2017 Arkansas Teacher of the Year award. Cotter High School’s Emily Hemme is one of 14 teachers from around Arkansas in the running to be a semifinalist.

Hemme received a $1,000 award for being selected a regional finalist. She and the 13 other educators will be recognized by Governor Asa Hutchinson and Arkansas Department of Education Commissioner Johnny Key Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 in the Old Supreme Court room at the Arkansas State Capitol in Little Rock, and during the ceremony, the four semifinalists will be announced. Later this fall, the selection committee will conduct site visits to observe the semifinalists in the classroom and interview the teachers and school administrators. The winner of the award will be announced by a surprise notification and receive an addition $14,000. The awards are made possible by a grant provided by the Walton Family Foundation.

Hemme is a Social Studies teacher for ninth through 12th grades at Cotter High School.
