Starting Monday, Mountain Home Public Schools will celebrate Red Ribbon Week, a national campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs. This year’s campaign theme is “YOLO” meaning “You Only Live Once.”

Throughout the week each school in the district will participate in activities to raise student and teacher awareness on the risks associated with drugs. Students at the kindergarten, Nelson-Wilks Herron and Pinkston schools will participate in a different dress up day and different events will be held at the schools including a student poster contest at the kindergarten and a visit from Mountain Home Police Officer Eddie Helmert and Bomber, the drug detention dog at the kindergarten and Nelson-Wilks school. Hackler Intermediate students will have lessons all week about the importance of unity against drugs and the Pinkson Middle School will host a canned food drive competition between the sixth and seventh grades. At the Junior High school, students will hear drug awareness presentations and on Halloween, participate in “Trick or Eat” bringing nonperishable food items for the school’s snack pack program and the Mountain Home Food Basket.

High school teachers are planning projects and activities aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of drugs. Monday Matt Sullivan fromDayspring Behavioral Health Services will host a drug free assembly. He will also educate teachers about drug awareness and the signs to watch for in students.

Superintendent, Dr. Jake Long believes participating in Red Ribbon Week is important so students can learn about the dangers of drugs since many people in the community have fallen victim to illegal drug use. He expresses pride in the faculties at the schools for making a commitment to the students’ futures by showing them the dangers of drug use and by modeling healthy lifestyle choices for them.
