MH splits with West Memphis to end regular season, girls clinch No. 3 seed

The Mountain Home High School basketball teams had mixed results to wrap up the regular season as they hosted West Memphis Friday for Senior Night.

The Lady Bombers clinched a No. 3 seed in next week’s Class 5A State Tournament by defeating the Lady Blue Devils 49-41. After West Memphis scored the first point of the game, Mountain Home went on a 9-0 run, but the Lady Blue Devils went on a 9-0 run of their own to finish the opening quarter. The two teams went back and forth more in the second period as West Memphis went into the locker room up two. The Lady Bombers captured the lead in the third quarter and did not relinquish it on their way to an eight-point victory.
Payton Huskey led Mountain Home with 18 points, Anna Grace Foreman scored 13, and Kate Gilbert added 11. For the Lady Blue Devils, Aryah Hazley had 22 points.
The Lady Bombers finished tied for third in the 5A-East with Paragould as they improve to 17-10 on the season and 9-5 in the league, and they’ll meet Sheridan in the state tournament Thursday afternoon at 1:00 on the campus of Lake Hamilton High School in Pearcy. West Memphis finishes its season at 13-11 and 6-8.

In the boys’ game, the Blue Devils ended up as conference runners-up after beating Mountain Home 57-46. The Bombers kept it close early on as the first half had two ties, but Mountain Home never led in the contest. Similar to the previous meeting, West Memphis pulled away in the third quarter to build a 20-point advantage and went on to win by 11.
The Bombers were led by Mat Jones with ten points. Chris Moore finished with 16 points for the Blue Devils, and Corliss Brewer chipped in 13.
West Memphis goes into the Class 5A State Tournament after going 23-5 overall and 11-3 conference play. Mountain Home’s year ends at 9-17 and 4-10.
