Sgt. Barry Montgomery of the Los Angeles Police Department said in a media briefing that officers pursued a vehicle with paper plates early in the afternoon after police believed it was stolen. The driver failed a traffic stop, according to LAPD, and police began to chase the vehicle.

The police-involved shooting happened after a passenger had exited the car and ran behind a residence, LAPD said. According to LAPD, a weapon was found at the scene and the driver of the pursuit car was still outstanding.

A woman at the briefing interrupted Montgomery and shouted that it was a teenager who was shot in the back while his hands were up. Police have not confirmed this information yet, and Montgomery said “it’s very preliminary in the investigation right now.”

Some crowds showed up to the area of the shooting Saturday and the LAPD wore helmets and carried batons to protect the crime scene.
