Hemera/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — Martin Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson will not be penalized after NASCAR announced early this week that both drivers’ cars failed a post-race laser inspection following the Chase opener at Chicagoland Speedway.

NASCAR on Wednesday revealed that it has revised its penalty system for post-race inspections, eliminating lower-tier penalties. The move is retroactive to last weekend’s race, so neither Truex nor Johnson will be penalized for their infractions, ESPN.com reports.

“We recognized if we were to apply those penalties as we listed them out for the event, those penalties would not have the same impact on the competitors based on the Chase format and the increased emphasis on win bonuses [to advance],” NASCAR Executive Vice President Steve O’Donnell said, according to ESPN.com.

Truex won the race at Chicagoland, assuring himself a spot in the next round in the Chase.
