McCabe Park to hold fishing derby for kids as part of grand opening

The city of Mountain Home will hold a free fishing derby for children to celebrate the opening of McCabe Park September 24, at 8 a.m. The 42 acre park is located on the west-side of town across from the new Harps store on Highway 62 near the Sheid-Hopper Bypass.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is stocking the five acre spring fed lake, known as Baker Lake, with more than 250 catfish. Street Director Amon Tilley says they hope to have 300 kids attend the grand opening. Attendees can enjoy free food and drinks and kids will have an opportunity to win prizes including, tackle boxes, fishing poles, backpacks, clothes and more.

Mountain Home Mayor Joe Dillard says the park is far from finished but progress is being made.

The city street department has made the park accessible by building gravel roads. Street Director Amon Tilley says the plan is to pave the roads in the upcoming year. Plans are also in the works to build a walking path to connect to Arkansas State University Mountain Home.

After the grand opening on September 24, the lake will be open to the public to fish free of charge.

Mayor Dillard said the city is looking for donations to name the sports complex and several other areas of the park. He says the cost to finish the complex is about $1 million dollars. The Mayor went on to say, the sooner funds are made available through generous donations, the sooner McCabe Park will be completed.
