iStock/Thinkstock(ANN ARBOR, Mich.) — University of Michigan golfer Nick Carlson received a congratulatory letter from golf legend Arnold Palmer, who passed away on Sept. 25.
Palmer sent the letter on Sept. 8, but Carlson did not receive it until Oct. 7. It was sent to the golf course where Carlson works in West Michigan. He had not been to the course until he was told he had mail waiting for him.
“Utter shock, really,” Carlson told The Detroit News. “Like, I never expected it. It’s just something really cool and almost a priceless moment, in my opinion.”
Palmer sent the letter congratulating Carlson on making it to the semifinals during the U.S. Amateur tournament in August. Carlson had barely been ranked in the top 2,000 golfers in the world and his run in the tournament was highly unexpected.

“I understand that you are a serious student of our great game of golf,” Palmer wrote to the 20-year-old, who is sophomore on the Michigan golf team, “as well as a good student and player at the University of Michigan. Keep up the good playing. I wish you the very best in whatever pursuit you choose to follow.”
